SNCF ' SCHWAIGER-VTG ' Bulk Carrier - 607 3 052-9

A series of private wagons from 'Railtrans' Company with the identity marking T4 (Railtrans nomenclature) which under Fbs adopted light grey livery (RAL 7035) with the recognisable advertising label 'SCHWAIGER-HOLZ'

Some model wagons were not originally painted in RAL 7035 (light grey in the property lists) but in the colours (RAL 9001, 9002, 9003, 9010 and 9011)

Length between buffers 14,000mm. Wheelbase of 8,500mm. Capacity of 103m3.

The wagons are fitted with Knorr system air brakes and many have also a hand brake (5-spoked hand wheel). The wagons have round or square buffers. Some wagons have a large handrail with the access steps at both ends while many are without a handrail at the front end.

An access ladder is installed at one end only. There are diagonally situated double hinged inspection doors. The outer chassis narrows towards the buffer back plates. Between the chassis members a bunker has been installed in order to increase the load capacity by 10m3. Hinged doors are provided in the end walls so that the wagon can be unloaded by tipping. The inner surfaces of the side walls have a smooth finish so that the load can be discharged without hindrance.

The vehicle is designed for the transport of wood pulp (wood chips and sawdust) but also for the transport of waste paper, rubbish and scrap iron. The Railtrans' private wagons are used in very large numbers especially in block trains for the transport of sawdust, rags and waste paper and trade systematically between large sawmills, waste dumps and paper mills throughout Europe.

Many of these high capacity wagons from Railtrans have been constructed in France on the chassis of old wagons of other types and are registered and hired out to other rail concerns.

In Austria these wagons in their striking liveries work between, for example, a sawmill in Solenau and a paper mill into the north of Graz on the Sudbahnstrecke as they do between Ybbs-Donau and Waldenhausen and Frantscach-St. Gertraud.

After long operation the original white lettering turns to a rusty orange from clinging brake dust but the original colours are not hard to make out under the brake dust.
